Andy Palacio is one of those rare birds: an accomplished guitarist and singer, and the director of a centre dedicated to Belizean culture and roots. His own Garifuna heritage is the fruit of the meeting between former African slaves and Amerindian communities called Island Caribs. Palacio has been the leading artist for the Stonetree record label founded by Ivan Duran in 1995. In 2007, he and his Garifuna Collective released an ambitious trans-generational effort called “Watina”. That same year, he and Duran won the WOMEX Award for their work on Belizean music and heritage. On January 19, 2008, Palacio died at the tragically young age of 47.
